I’ve created the Bacalar Food Guide to help you choose the perfect place to dine out and enjoy the glorious food options on offer here. It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t pair that with a dessert edition – The Ultimate Brownie Guide edition!
Although by the end of your meal you might be filled to the brim with all of the Mexican delicacies – we all know that dessert doesn’t really go to the stomach, it goes to the heart…
So yes, we’re brownie people. We love a brownie, but not just any brownie – it needs to be the perfect gooeyness, richness and sweetness to hit the spot. And of course, be accompanied by a good vanilla ice-cream scoop. Two months in Bacalar gave us the perfect opportunity to overindulge and test various brownies in town to create this brownie guide. There were many different types, different textures and different tastes. Naturally, we decided to rate each brownie we had and give you guys our ratings and details so you too can find your perfect brownie while visiting! 😊
I feel like speaking about so much sugar should come with a warning, so here it is, I hope you’re ready for it 😉
The Ultimate Brownie Bacalar List
Savora Bakhalal
â‹… Rating: 7/10 â‹…
This place is right at the main square, and we stopped by after spotting someone eating a brownie. We waited for quite some time before getting the brownie served, and overall, the brownie was good. It was slightly warmed, not very sweet, quite rich but at the same time the texture was light. It gave off the taste of dark chocolate. It came with ice cream and a strawberry.
La Maison de Yara Café Galeria
(Starbucks of Bacalar)
â‹… Rating: 5/10 â‹… Hersheys – 7/10 â‹… Kit Kat – 8/10 â‹…
This café has various ‘brownies’ of different flavors alongside the standard version. During our first try, there were no standard brownies left, so we tried the Hersheys and Kit Kat ones. They were warmed up, which I don’t think was a good idea because of how sweet they were. I would give the Hersheys one a much lower score on our brownie guide scale because it was way too sweet for my taste – but Dan’s sugar tolerance is much higher than mine. The Kit Kat was good, but also too sweet, especially when heated. And I’m still not sure if I’d categorize these as brownies.
On our next visit, we got the standard brownie which was great, had a light texture and wasn’t too rich or sweet. I was able to choose extra sauce and toppings if I wanted, but sadly, they had no ice cream.
Tip: If you search your maps for Starbucks, you’ll see this place pop up. That’s because it serves Starbucks coffee, which I highly recommend as an addition to your brownie tasting (:
Enamora
â‹… Rating: 5/10 â‹…
These guys serve a plant-based brownie topped with nuts. Although it comes out cold, it is still served with ice cream on top, making the brownie quite hard as the ice cream basically freezes it. Also, the ice cream flavor is chocolate! To me, that just does not work with a chocolate brownie, at all. The brownie itself was nice, nicely sweet and filling.
Kai Pez
â‹… Rating: 8/10 â‹…
Okay, so this brownie was preeetty good, it was a decent size, a great balance of sweetness and richness and was served with nuts and a scoop of ice cream. It did however have one downside – the brownie came out cold. A good idea might be to ask if it can be heated? That for sure would make it a solid 9/10.
Club Magico
â‹… Rating: 2/10 â‹…
As harsh as the score might look, it’s actually generous. The ‘brownie’ here was not a brownie at all, but a very bad chocolate sponge cake, served cold with ice cream and overly sweet cherry syrup (and one of those fake sugar cherries on top). A group of at least 12 people shared it amongst themselves – everyone had enough after one bite and the opinion was indifferent – a hard pass.
Update – I can no longer find this club on the maps, so I’m not too sure if it still exists? It was somewhere near Galeon Pirata Cultural Centre (on the same road). If you’re traveling to Bacalar and find yourself walking by, please let me know (:
Baraka (Parque Nacional Maracuya)
â‹… Rating: 7/10 â‹…
As I’ve mentioned in the Bacalar Food Guide, Baraka became my second home while in Bacalar and everything served in this café is delicious and made with love. The brownie was a new addition at the time I was there, and my friend and I were offered a tasting trial of the plain brownie cubes – they were lovely, great sweetness and gooeyness, but plain. On our next visit, we got the real deal. The brownie was perfected with richness and served with roasted homemade granola on top. It’s different, but very delicious and it perfectly matches the style and class of Baraka.
Tip: There is a vegan ice-cream stand right by the water deck in Maracuya – could be a great combination with this brownie (why am I only thinking of this now?).
ChiltepÃn Marisquillos
â‹… Rating: 9.5/10 – winner! â‹…
Unfortunately (although I’m sure our sugar levels were thankful), this restaurant only opened in the last week of our stay in Bacalar. It was pretty empty at first, but when we visited the night before our departure to get our last brownie hit, it was super packed. Why? Because it’s just so damn good. All the food here is top-level, but the brownies – omg! Heated to perfection, a little gooey, a little rich, with smooth, melted chocolate sauce on top, decorated with strawberries – it was love at first sight (: The ice cream was good, but could have had a little more flavor, which is the only reason for the half-a-point drop!
I realize this Brownie Guide is very specific, and I’m exposing my sweet tooth here, but please remember this testing was conducted over a two-month period. Always eat responsibly (;
To counteract all of that sweet goodness, check out the Guide to Bacalar to find out the top things to do in Bacalar and fully experience this magical place.
Nevertheless, this is for all my fellow brownie amigos out there, traveling the world and craving a good brownie – I hope this helps you in your search!
Where should we test next?
Tasty travels!
